Somali army kills seventeen al-Shabaab militants in overnight airstrike

(MENAFN) The Somali National Army reported Tuesday that 17 al-Shabaab militants were killed during an overnight airstrike in southern Somalia.

According to the Defense Ministry, the operation targeted a site in the Jabad Godone area of the Middle Shabelle region, where the al-Qaeda-linked group had been planning attacks and producing explosive devices. The ministry added that weapons and vehicles used by the militants were destroyed during the strike, which was carried out with international support.

Al-Shabaab has waged an insurgency against the Somali government for over 16 years, frequently attacking security personnel, government officials, and civilians.

Since late 2024, the Somali National Army, together with security forces in the semi-autonomous region of Puntland, has intensified air operations against al-Shabaab in southern and central provinces, as well as ISIS (Daesh) in the northeastern Bari region, with backing from international security partners.
