Somali Forces Seize Al-Shabaab Hideout in Southern Region
Somali troops are focusing on consolidating their hold over the Hawaadley area in Middle Shabelle under the newly launched Operation Badr, a campaign targeting locations exploited by the militants as “safe havens.” The ministry added that forces continue to pursue remaining fighters and conduct clearance operations in recently reclaimed zones.
The offensive has already destroyed multiple Al-Shabaab positions and storage facilities.
Officials emphasized that counterterrorism efforts “will continue to intensify.”
Operation Rolling Thunder, launched on March 1, forms part of the broader Operation Badr and receives backing from international partners, including Ugandan troops serving with the African Union mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
Al-Shabaab has waged an insurgency against the Somali government for more than 16 years, routinely targeting security personnel, government officials, and civilians. Since last July, the Somali army, with support from AUSSOM and other international allies, has intensified operations against the group. The UN Security Council renewed the AUSSOM mandate for another year in December through a UK-supported resolution, extending its authorization until Dec. 31.
