Somalia Slams Israel Over Somaliland Recognition
Speaking in an interview with media, a local media station based in Mogadishu, Mohamud declared the move one of the most damaging moments the country has faced in recent memory. "Tel Aviv is taking advantage of the long-standing dispute between Mogadishu and Hargeisa," he said.
The Somali president said Mogadishu had weighed two possible courses of action in addressing the breakaway region and had deliberately chosen diplomacy over military force. "Though it took over 30 years, it was the most suitable approach under the circumstances," he said.
Mohamud also stressed that Somalia has never established diplomatic relations with Israel, describing Tel Aviv as an aggressor against the Palestinian people.
Israel formally recognized Somaliland as an independent sovereign state in late December 2025. The breakaway territory has operated as a de facto self-governing entity — with its own administration, political structures, and security apparatus — since declaring independence from Somalia in 1991, though it has never received official international recognition.
Mogadishu firmly rejects any notion of Somaliland statehood, regards the territory as an integral part of Somalia, and considers any direct foreign engagement with Hargeisa a violation of Somali sovereignty and national unity.
